Suits aired for nine seasons on the USA Network before ending in 2019. However, some longtime fans were disappointed with its short final season.
Even so, Suits became one of the network’s biggest hits and is known as one of the top legal dramas.
The show follows Mike Ross (Patrick J. Adams), an unlicensed lawyer who practices law without a degree due to his photographic memory.
Because of its success, a spin-off series called Pearson was created but only lasted one season on the same network. In October 2023, another spin-off, Suits: L.A., was announced.
It follows former New York prosecutor Ted Black (Stephen Amell) and his law firm, which handles criminal and entertainment law.
With this new series, many fans are revisiting Suits’ long run and questioning why season 9 had only 10 episodes instead of the usual 16. The reason behind this was unexpected.
Suits’ creator planned for season 9 to end on a “high note” in summer.
Suits season 9 aired from July to September 2019.
Fans were surprised that the final season had only 10 episodes. Despite a happy ending for the main characters and the firm, the shorter season stood out.
In an interview with Deadline, Aaron Korsh explained that the departure of Patrick J. Adams and Meghan Markle influenced the show’s conclusion.
Korsh confirmed that they chose to air 10 episodes in the summer to “go out on a high note” and bring back key characters for the finale—the decision aimed to create a satisfying ending while keeping the story in one season.
Tip: Suits are available to stream on Netflix and Peacock.
Season 9 had only 10 episodes, but it wrapped up the story well. The network allowed Aaron Korsh to stick to the usual 16-episode format, but he decided on 10 instead.
Even with fewer episodes, the final season delivered a strong ending.
Donna (Sarah Rafferty) and Harvey (Gabriel Macht) left the firm to work with Mike in Seattle. Louis Litt (Rick Hoffman) welcomed a baby with his wife, Shelia.
Mike’s return was key in saving the firm, leading to its final name change—Litt Wheeler Williams Bennett.
Why Suits Season 9 Ending Felt Sudden?
The last episode of Season 9 introduced and resolved some storylines quickly.
Suits’ Season 9 finale felt rushed because it had six fewer episodes to wrap up character arcs.
Faye Richardson (Denise Crosby), the season’s primary opponent, tries to control the firm but has little time to leave a strong impact before the partners execute a quick plan to remove her.
Big character choices happen suddenly, like Donna and Harvey deciding to leave, and some storylines remain unresolved.
While some arcs in the finale were left open, they still felt complete. Since a new series is coming and the original characters won’t return, the show’s direction seems to be changing.
Many fans may have wanted a more extended ending, but the finale gave closure to key characters and made space for a new chapter with Suits L.A.
